The middle of next week we will celebrate Rosh Hashanah together as a community. The holiday has a dual message that is worth describing. Firstly, it recognizes the kingship of G-d in his universal nature. Secondly it is the day of judgement. We are called to account for our deeds this past year and turn to each other for forgiveness and reconciliation. In essence we act as a community; acknowledging our fallibility and our desire to work with each other. No place is this better presented than in the blowing of the shofar. It is a call to look at ourselves and to acknowledge G-d’s sovereignty. In fact, according to the Rambam , the blowing of the shofar is the only mitzvah related to Rosha Hashanah in the Torah (Hilchot Shofar, chapt 1,2).
The duality of acknowledging G-d and turning to each other to form community is instructive for all of us. How can we engage each other and create community under Divine guidance? This week the Y and Herzliah made a joint announcement about our future plans. A letter of intent was written for both institutions to explore a new campus for Herzliah at the Y. We are turning towards each other in order to create a better future for our children. This act, which I hope will end in an agreement, will steer our future together. It is the clarion call of the shofar to turn towards each other, and by so doing, engage, create, and bind our futures together. By working together as a dynamic team we will draw closer the holy presence of G-d to us, our children, and all of Montreal. May the shofar this year be that clarion call for togetherness, and mutual enterprise.

Au milieu de la semaine prochaine, notre communauté célébrera Roch Hachana. Cette fête véhicule un double message qui est important de préciser. Avant tout, il reconnaît la royauté de D.ieu dans sa nature universelle. En deuxième lieu, il représente le jour du jugement. Nous sommes appelés à rendre compte de nos actes durant l’année qui vient de s’écouler et à nous tourner vers l'autre pour demander pardon et se réconcilier. En fait, nous agissons en tant que communauté. Nous reconnaissons notre faillibilité et notre désir de travailler avec l'autre. Ce qui est tout à fait représenté par le son du shofar. C'est un appel à nous regarder et à reconnaître la souveraineté de D.ieu. En fait, selon le Rambam, le son du shofar est la seule mitsva liée à Rosh Hachana dans la Torah (Hilchot Shofar, chap 1,2).
La dualité de reconnaître D.ieu et se tourner vers l'autre pour faire partie d’une communauté est une leçon pour tous. Comment pouvons-nous engager les uns les autres et créer une communauté sous la direction divine? Cette semaine, le YM-YWHA et Talmud Torah| Herzliah ont fait une annonce conjointe à propos de nos plans futurs. Une lettre d'intention a été rédigée pour les deux institutions afin d'explorer un nouveau campus pour l’école secondaire Herzliah au YM-YWHA. Nous nous tournons vers l'autre afin de créer un meilleur avenir pour nos enfants. Cet acte, qui, je l'espère, se conclura par un accord, dessinera notre avenir ensemble. C'est le cri de ralliement du shofar qui nous fait tourner les uns vers les autres, et, ce faisant, nous nous engageons, créons et tissons notre avenir ensemble. En travaillant comme une équipe dynamique, nous nous rapprocherons de D.ieu, de nos enfants et de toute la communauté juive de Montréal. Que cette année, le shofar soit un appel vers la convivialité et l’entente mutuelle!
